An improved version of the U.S. M3 Stewart light tank entered service as the M5 in 1942 and was supplied to British and Commonwealth forces under lend-lease prior to the U.S. entry into the war. Afterwards, it was used by U.S. and Allied forces until the end of World War II. Unfortunately the improved M5 series lacked firepower and kept the same underpowered 37 mm gun.
