Supermarine Spitfire MK. XVIe

This Spitfire Mk.XVIe was built by Vickers at Castle Bromwich, UK, in 1945. The Spitfire carries the markings of No. 416, “City of Oshawa” Squadron, one of eleven RCAF squadrons that fought over North West Europe in 1944-5. It is on loan from the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

Supermarine Spitfire MK. XVIe

The distinctive features of the Mk.XVIe, included a Packard Merlin 266 engine, E Type wing, teardrop canopy, and modified landing gear. All production Mk.XVIs had clipped wings for low altitude work and were fitted with rear fuselage fuel tanks with a combined capacity of 75 gallons.
