B-17E Big Stoop
Top Turret

This is the top turret from the B-17E (No. 41-9101) "Big Stoop." The bomber, along with another B-17 and six P-38 Lockheed Lightnings, landed on the Greenland ice cap in 1942 on their way to Europe. The brand new aircraft were abandoned. This top turret, and other parts of "Big Stoop" were recovered in August 1990 from 260 feet below the ice cap.
