McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle

F-15s served as escorts in Operation Opera, against the Iraqi nuclear plant. They excelled in Operation Peace for the Galilee, shooting down 30 Syrian aircraft and proved their long range effectiveness when they attacked PLO headquarters in Tunis in 1985.

The IAF received its first F-15A in 1976. The IAF specifically formed 133 Squadron in late 1976 to operate the sophisticated aircraft in the counter-air role and they shot down 16 enemy planes during the next four years. They scored their first air-to-air kills on 27 June 1979, when a flight downed four Syrian MiG-21s that were trying to intercept IAF aircraft attacking PLO targets in Lebanon.
