Hawker Hurricane Mk.XIIB

This aircraft (serial #5667, construction #56022) was built in Canada in 1943, never left Canada during the war, and was surplused in October, 1946. It was recovered from a farm in Saskatchewan in 1965. After a long restoration, it flew again in May, 1994, and came to the museum in 2001, in almost completely original condition.

Hawker Hurricane
Mk.XIIB

Although overshadowed by British propaganda trumpeting the Spitfire, the Hurricane accounted for 60% of RAF air victories in the Battle of Britain. It was slightly slower than both the Spitfire Mk.II and the Messerschmitt Bf 109E, but it could out-turn both of them. The Hurricane was quite capable of destroying the Bf 109E, especially at lower altitudes. The Mark XIIB was Canadian built and used the U.S. 1,300 h.p. Packard Merlin 29 engine. Unlike this example, many Mark XIIBs were armed with 12 .303 machine guns wing.
