The P-51A mounted an Allison V-1710-81 engine rated
at 1200 hp, which gave it a maximum speed of 409 mph at 11,000 feet.
It was faster, at medium altitudes, than any other fighter then
in service at the time. Of the 310 P-51As built, 35 were redesignated
F-6B and 50 went to the RAF, becoming Mustang IIs.
