Bacharach

Bacharach, named for Bacchus - the Roman god of wine, is a medieval walled town on the west bank of the Rhine River. The first documentary evidence of its existence is in 923. From 1300 to 1600, Bacharach was a major wine center. Due to the Rhine's shallow waters, ships had to unload upstream and reload in Bacharach.
