Freedom Monument

This 14 meter high monument can be seen from most of Pest and many locations in Buda. The Soviets used it to remind the people who liberated them from Fascist rule. The statue of a Red Army soldier, holding a red flag, that once stood guard at the foot of the monument seems to have disappeared after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Freedom Monument

The Freedom Monument (formerly known as the Liberation Monument) was first erected by Admiral Horthy, Hungary's prewar and WWII dictator. It had a female figure holding an aircraft propeller and was commissioned after Horthy's son was killed in a plane crash during WWII. The Soviets replaced the statue with one by the same sculptor. This one has the woman holding a palm branch rather than a propellor.
