Barcelona had a substancial medieval Jewish presence, and its original Jewish neighborhood was called the Call Mayor (Major Call), which housed the Jewish residents from the 12th-14th centuries. King Jaume was a warriorking who founded the Catalonian empire and expanded its territorial holdings during his reign. He turned over much of the management and record keeping of his kingdom to Jewish hands since they were the educated class.
