Granada's name may have been derived from the Spanish granada, meaning pomegranate, it is a locally abundant fruit that appears on the city's coat of arms.

Pomegranate Tree

The Pomegranate originated in southern Asia but is now common throughout the tropics and subtropics. It was well known in the Mediterranean region in early historical times and seems well adapted to the semiarid parts of the area.
