This a statue of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
(1618-1682), opposite the gateway that leads to the Botanical Gardens.
He was the first Spanish painter to achieve renown throughout Europe
with his many religious paintings which emphasized the peaceful,
joyous aspects of spiritual life.
