Western Wall Tunnel

The smoother stones on the bottom of the photo are stones that were originally part of the Second Temple. Those with gaps in between were repairs made by the Muslims in about 700 CE.

Western Wall Tunnel

The tunnel has numerous arches that formed a bridge supporting staircases that allowed access to the Temple Mount. It served as an aqueduct in the Hasmonean Period and goes directly underneath the Muslim Quarter.
