Three weeks after we visited this site a 14 year-old boy found a rare half shekel coin - first minted in 66 or 67 CE - while sifting through mounds of dirt from the Temple Mount.
The half shekel tax is mentioned in the book of Exodus, commanding every Jew to contribute half a shekel to the Temple every year for the purpose of purchasing public sacrifices.
A photo of the coin is on the left of this page.
