Archaeological Excavations

Everywhere you turn in and around the Old City, you will see archaeological excavations taking place. This one is just outside the Dung Gate. It reveals the remains of the Umayyad palace. The palace was apparently constructed during the reign of the Umayyad caliph el-Walid I (705-715 CE).
