"Jimmy" Stewart

1940s -- Jimmy Stewart enlisted in the Army in March 1941. An avid pilot in civilian life, he was assigned to the Air Corps and logged more than 1,800 hours of flight time in bomber missions. He began flying combat missions on March 31, 1944, and was appointed Operations Officer of the 453rd Bomb Group and, later, Chief of Staff of the 2nd Combat Wing, 2nd Air Division of the 8th Air Force. He ended the war with 20 combat missions.
