The Maschinengewehr 08 was the Greman version of the machine gun developed by Hiram Maxim in 1884. It fired 400 to 450 7.92x57mm rounds per minute.
The Maxim gun was first used by Britain's colonial forces in the 1893–1894 First Matabele War in Rhodesia. Vickers then improved and redesigned the Maxim. It was introduced into the British Army in 1912 and remaining in service until 1968. The German Army's Maschinengewehr 08 and the Russian Pulemyot Maxim were both copies of the Maxim.
