18-Pounder Shell Cutaway

This cutaway of an 18-pounder shell reveals the leathal casing and shrapnel balls that could shred flesh on the battlefield. Upon explosion, the casing broke up into jagged pieces. This munition has been obsolete since the end of World War I for anti-personnel use, when it was superseded by high-explosive shells for that role.
