The Conquerors

This scene was painted in 1920 by Eric Kennington (1888–1960). Originally entitled The Victims, both dead and living soldiers march over the remains of their fallen companions in a shattered landscape. The dead are distinguished by their white faces and dark-rimmed eyes. The Canadian advance in the Hundred Days was a brilliant, but costly, victory.
