The British made Churchill tank first saw action during the Dieppe raid, in 1942, where it was used by the Canadians. This Churchill has extensions to its air intakes and exhausts like those used during the raid. The British designed the Churchill for broken, cratered terrain. The resulting tank was slow but was protected by heavy armor. The Churchill also served as the basis for a number of tanks with specialized functions. British Churchills equipped with combat engineering equipment landed with Canadians on D-Day.
