Surrender of
General Burgoyne

This painting by John Trumbull was commissioned in 1817 and placed in the Rotunda in 1826. The surrender of British General Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York, on 17 October 1777, was a turning point in the Revolutionary War, for it prevented the British from dividing New England from the rest of the colonies.
