The configuration of a high, wide cab looking over a short, narrow hood became standard for American diesel switchers and eventually lead to the modern road switchers.

DL&W pre-SC
EMD No. 426

This Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad diesel switcher was built by EMD in 1935 as a S-series 600-horsepower locomotive. No. 426 is a pre-SC class prototype and one of the first end-cab switchers ever manufactured.
