Bob Hoover talked about flying the Spitfire in combat. Here he described a running dogfight in his Spitfire Mk.V where he was shot down by a Fw-190 at 90 degrees to his path of flight. He figured the enemy to the side could not possibly make a shot. He later learned the pilot that shot him down had 70 victories and a reputation for making successful high deflection shots.
