M1939 37mm Automatic Antiaircraft Gun

The Soviets copied the 37mm M1939 from the Swedish 25mm Bofors antiaircraft gun gun sold to them in 1935. Because of this, it closely resembled the 40mm guns used by the U.K. and U.S. during WWII. The ammunition was fed via five round charger clips. It had a 160 to 180 rounds per minute rate of fire.

M1939 37mm
Antiaircraft Gun

The Israelis captured M1939s from the Arab armies during the Six Day War (1967) and Yom Kippur War (1973) and commissioned them into IAF service. Operating the cannon required exceptional coordination because of its steering methods. The cannons were used as defensive armament to protect strategic points within Israel.
