Pineapple plants normally produce two fruits in their life. The plants in this photo have produced their first fruit and will generate one more before the grower clears the field in preparation for the next crop. After the first fruit is harvested, a second crop develops. The second crop is produced in 12 months. The fruits are harvested when nearly ripe. Unlike other fruits such as bananas, pineapples do not ripen any more after being harvested.
