By hinging the driving wheels in two sets, a much larger and more powerful locomotive could be built that could travel easier through curves. The boiler was attached to the rear engine, enabling the front engine to pivot freely from side to side.

Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range
2-8-8-4 Steam Locomotive

Inside the restored cab of DM&IR Yellowstone No. 227. A 2-8-8-4 is a steam locomotive with two leading wheels, two sets of eight driving wheels, and a four-wheel trailing truck. No. 227 is an articulated locomotive, meaning it had a hinged joint between the first and second groups of driving wheels.
