The DUKW is a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of the 2-ton capacity GMC CCKW trucks used by the U.S. military in World War II.

The name DUKW comes from the model naming terminology used by GMC:

"D", designed in 1942
"U", "utility"
"K", all-wheel drive
"W", dual rear axles
