Construction and assembly of the High Altitude Long Endurance Demonstrator (HALE-D) was scheduled to begin in 2007 with the first flight scheduled for 2009. On Thursday, May 18, 2006, there was a large explosion and fire at the airdock. Some 15 to 20 Akron fire companies came to the scene. Work crews were doing major renovations to the airdock, replacing roofing, windows and siding, and removing interior catwalks, debris, and many of the existing offices.
