Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress Liberty Belle

This aircraft was destroyed by fire after a forced landing on June 13, 2011. It was flying out of Aurora Municipal Airport (near Chicago, Illinois) when its number 2 (inside port) engine caught fire, forcing the pilot to make a wheels-down landing in a muddy cornfield. Emergency firecrews could not quickly get to the aircraft due to the soft ground from recent rains, and the fire consumed the airframe. There were seven people on board, and, fortunately, no one was hurt. It was one of only 11 B-17s in flyable condition.
