Basilica Cistern

The columns were taken from the ruins of buildings built before Byzantium became Constantinople. This use of older material saved Justinian's builders the trouble of building new columns and inadvertently preserved the only traces of these early Byzantine structures, which have long since despaired.

Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern was built during the reign of Emperor Justinianus in 532 CE to meet the growing water needs of the Great Palace, which was located on the other side of the Hippodrome. There are 336 marble columns in the cistern, each 9 meters high.
