There were no pineapple plants in Hawaii bearing fruit when we were there. This field was being prepared for propagation of new pineapple plants. Growers take suckers from around the base of mature plants to cultivate new plants. The mature plants do flower and would produce seeds if pollination were permitted. The presence of seeds harms the quality of the fruit so, in Hawaii, importation of hummingbirds is prohibited for this reason. It takes 18 months for the new plant to produce its first fruit.
