No. 47 was built for Grand Trunk Railway Co. of Canada as No. 1542. It became Canadian National No. 47, class
X- 10a, after the merger of the two companies in 1923. Locomotive has no tender but a tank for water and a bin for five tons of coal built into the extended frame behind the cab. The engine operated equally well in forward or reverse, an important asset when commuter turning facilities were lacking.
