In 2002, when '177 underwent her final programmed depot maintenance, she was repainted in its original 1970s era gray and white scheme to honor her place in history. On 7 October 2002, hundreds of people at the Warner Robbins Air Logistics Center witnessed the Hanoi taxi depart in its "new" paint scheme.

This C-141C was assigned to Air Force Reserve Command's 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She first flew in 1967 and went through two major modifications. The first brought her up to C-141B standards in the late 1970s. In the early 1990s, she was equipped with digital avionics and became a C-141C.
